Ski Area Summit with Summit Chamber of Commerce

Published: October 22, 2024

On Friday, October 4, the Summit Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual COO Ski Area Summit, an event that draws attention to the exciting plans and updates for the 2024-25 ski season. Held at Copper Mountain Resort, the summit featured presentations from the Chief Operating Officers (COOs) of all five of Summit County’s ski areas: Copper Mountain, Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, and Loveland. As temperatures remain warm, anticipation for the winter season grew as the COOs shared their updates and strategies for the months ahead.

Copper Mountain Resort

As the host for this year’s summit, Copper Mountain Resort led the way with President and General Manager Dustin Lyman sharing exciting updates. Lyman highlighted that 2023 was a record-breaking year for investments at Copper, particularly with the opening of The Aerie Lodge a massive 25,000-square-foot facility that offers dining with stunning views of the Gore and Tenmile Ranges.

In addition to the new lodge, Copper expanded its parking infrastructure by adding 900 new parking spaces and purchasing buses to improve transportation. A major upgrade to the Timberline Express Lift went from a four-seater to a six-seater and will improve access to the west side of the mountain, with the new lift scheduled to open in late November. Copper Mountain’s season kicks off on November 8th.

Breckenridge Ski Resort

At Breckenridge Ski Resort, COO Jon Copeland reflected on the successful completion of several lift projects, including the opening of the upgraded Five SuperChair last season. This enhanced lift has improved access to intermediate terrain and transformed Peak 8.

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, Breckenridge will pilot an AI-based check-out system at its food and beverage locations and expand grab-and-go options at the Horizon Hut on Peak 6. The resort will also add beginner glade runs on Peak 9, designed to enhance the experience for families and beginners. Breckenridge’s season opens on November 8, preceded by the popular Wake Up Breck event on November 7.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area

Arapahoe Basin COO Alan Henceroth shared updates on the pending sale of the resort to Alterra Mountain Company. While the Department of Justice is still investigating the transaction, Henceroth remains optimistic that the sale will close by the end of 2024.

The ski area will introduce a new parking reservation system for peak days, requiring reservations from December 21 through May 4 to help manage guest numbers. Despite the ownership changes, Henceroth assured attendees that A-Basin is poised for one of its best seasons yet.

Loveland Ski Area

True to its roots, Loveland Ski Area COO Rob Goodell emphasized Loveland’s commitment to maintaining an authentic and affordable ski experience. While there are no major changes this season, Loveland has kept prices for passes frozen and continues to offer free parking, reflecting the resort’s mission to keep skiing accessible to all as the only independent skiing experience.

Keystone Resort

Keystone Resort welcomed a new leader, COO Shannon Buhler, daughter of John Buhler, former Keystone and Breckenridge COO. She shared her excitement about returning to her hometown in Summit County. Buhler detailed Keystone’s achievements from last season, including the opening of the Bergman Express Lift, which unlocked 555 acres of skiable terrain.

The resort will also host several new events this winter. Keystone’s popular fireworks show on New Year’s Eve is set to return, and River Run Village continues its transformation with the addition of the luxury Kindred Resort.

Get Ready for the 2024-25 Ski Season

With exciting developments across Summit County’s ski areas during the Ski Area Summit, the 2024-25 winter season promises to be one of the best yet. From new lifts and enhanced facilities to innovative events and guest experiences, all five resorts are gearing up for a season of fun and adventure.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s time to start planning for another incredible ski season in Summit County.
