Summit County – Happy and Healthy

Published: March 9, 2016

Summit County Happy and HealthyWhy do you live where you do? Did you move somewhere for a job? Do you still reside in the area where you grew up so you could be close to family? Do you live somewhere because it fits your lifestyle?

Most people living in mountain communities have one thing in common – they live there because of the active lifestyle.  According data released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and analyzed by Rocky Mountain PBS I-News, residents living in mountain communities in the Western Slope area generally rank as the healthiest in Colorado – that’s us Summit County!

Overall, Colorado is one of the healthiest states in the country. Many attribute Summit County’s health and happiness to the amount of sunshine and the many activities that can be enjoyed on a daily basis. Skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, fat biking and snowmobiling are extremely popular in the winter and during the summer months, hiking, camping, biking, rafting and fishing are amongst the top activities that locals participate in daily. Naturally, these activities are what keep us happy and healthy.

According to the most recent Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index report, Colorado ranks fourth in the U.S. for overall healthiness. Gallup-Healthways conducted 177,281 interviews nationwide in 2015 – talking to U.S. residents nearly every day. The data collected measured five elements that create well-being: purpose (liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals), social relationships, financial security, community (liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community) and physical health.

Colorado’s Well-Being Index ranked at 63.6 – scoring 15 in purpose, 21 in social, 17 in financial, six in community and two in physical health. Dan Witters, research director for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, told The Huffington Post. “If you look at the top states on the list, many of them have a pretty distinct brand and identity about them. I think that unique identity can grease the wheels to having a more unified culture around well-being.”

We agree with Witters, understanding Colorado’s state brand “It’s Our Nature” explains it all. It’s safe to say we are proud Summit County is among one of the healthiest and happiest counties in the state of Colorado
