Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, Colorado is host to the ever-so-popular Spartan Race this weekend, June 13th.  Hosting the “Elite Men’s and Women’s Sprint”, “3+ Mile Sprint” and the “13+ Mile Beast” competitors can expect this to be a challenging race! NBC Sports will be on course all weekend filming the best stories in obstacle racing.

More than 5,000 participants have signed up – and they’re bringing spectators – so expect a lot of people in town this weekend!

The “Elite Men’s and Women’s Sprint”, is made up of past Spartan race winners and racers in competing against one another to qualify for the Spartan World Championships. Competitors have done this race before and are racing against one another competing to be the best of the best! NBC Sports will be televising this division race live!

The 3+ Mile Sprint features 20+ obstacles that include jumping over fire, crawling under barbed wire and running through mud and water. The Spartan Sprints are a great starting point for beginners and seasoned athletes – the goal of the sprint is to complete it in 90 minutes/fastest time!

The 13+ Mile Beast is a grueling race! Featuring 30+ obstacles that include jumping over fire, crawling under barbed wire and running through mud and water – it is a test of endurance and mental strength! The Beast is meant to get competitors out of their comfort zone and to complete it in 6 hours or less.

While Spartan Races vary in distance, the obstacles themselves also vary and are unpredictable. Participants must complete each obstacle presented to them or perform 30 burpees (a penalty exercise for not completing the obstacle) before advancing to the next segment of the race. Unlike other companies, Spartan Race does not provide a course map or list of obstacle to their participants until race day. Frequently presented obstacles include:

  1. Fire jump: participants leap over flames, typically at the beginning or end of a race.
  2. Barbed wire crawl: a crawl through mud under barbed wire. Crawls range from 20-100+ yards in length.
  3. Over-Under-Through: a series of obstacles in which runners must first climb over a wall, then under a wall, then through a tire or square hole placed in a wall.
  4. Spear throw: from a distance of 10-20 yards, athletes must throw a wooden spear into a target.
  5. Object carry: typically a tire, rock-filled bucket, or sandbag over a certain distance.
  6. Herculean Hoist: a cement block or heavy bucket is lifted off the ground using a pulley system.
  7. Tyrolean Traverse: traversing a single rope that is hung horizontally between two posts or trees.
  8. Slippery Wall: a wall built at an incline (roughly 45 degrees) that is covered in soap or grease.
  9. Log Jump: Logs are arranged in a zig-zag pattern at varying heights and participants have to hop on them without touching the ground.
  10. Rope Climb: A rope is hung over a body of water/mud with a bell installed at the very top. Participants must “ring the bell” before climbing down.
  11. Rolling Mud: A steep mud hill followed by deep pits of water, repeating 3-6 times.
  12. Tractor Pull: A 50 lbs cement block hooked to a chain that you must drag through the mud around a small track.
  13. Underwater Wall: A large wooden wall placed just on the surface of the water forcing you to swim or crawl under.
  14. Tire Flip: Flipping a large tractor tire over a predetermined amount of times.
  15. Stump Balance: Hopping across mud covered small stumps without falling off.
  16. Monkey Bars: A series of elevated bars that you must swing across without falling to the ground.
  17. Rope Swing: A rope placed before a small body of water that you must swing across without dropping into the water.

The main Expo Village will be in the Beaver Run parking lot, along with the start and finish lines directly adjacent beneath the Quicksilver Chair.  Spectators will be able to watch from the Vista Haus (with the purchase of a Scenic Ride ticket) and from the Beaver Run area. All Spartan participants and spectators can park for free at Airport Road “Satellite Lot” and take the event shuttle to Beaver Run, or utilize the paid VIP parking in F-Lot.
