Breckenridge is hosting the 36th Annual Breckenridge Film Festival this weekend (September 15-18).
Founded in 1981 by Breckenridge locals, Meg Lass and Mary Rianoshek, the Breckenridge Film Festival has evolved from its early days. In the first 10 to 15 years, the festival featured “A- List” celebrities and big name movies which were brought in with the help of renowned film critic Jeffrey Lyons.
Through the years the festival has shifted and changed to what it has become today. The Breckenridge Film Festival, much like most other film festivals now focus on independent films – a shift brought on by advances in technology.
Gone are the days when film required a great expense and specialized labs. Now producers are able to use all different mediums to create a movie. The freedom of producing film on personal computers and technology has changed the entire film industry and the festival has shifted with it.
Featuring seven different categories of film – Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Films of the Human Spirit and Explore; the Breckenridge Film Festival has a diverse selection of film genres that appeal to all audiences.
This year, the festival received 353 submissions. Of those 353 submissions, roughly 28 films were chosen to be featured.
Thursday, September 15th is opening night and will feature “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, The Touring Years,” directed by Ron Howard, which is also premiering in London the same day.
Friday through Sunday will be filled with films, forums, parties and Q&A sessions with filmmakers. Multiple filmmakers will be in attendance throughout the weekend to present their films and answer questions.
