Snowmaking & Opening Day

The temperatures have been dropping dramatically across Summit County and Copper Mountain is taking advantage of it by getting ahead with snowmaking!  During the early hours on Sunday October, 4th, the snowmaking guns kicked on for the upcoming season and began to produce snow.  Copper Mountain is scheduled to open on Friday, November 6th!

On opening day, Copper will introduce the U.S. Alpine Ski Team at a pep-rally event.  Cheer on your favorite professional athletes at the First Tracks.  Athletes expected to attend the event include Mikaela Shiffrin, Julia Mancuso, Ted Ligety and Lindsey Vonn.

The NASTAR Pacesetting Trials will also take place on opening day at Copper.  Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety will headline the trail along with current and previous U.S. Ski Team athletes including world champion Daron Rahlves, Olympian Kaylin Richardson, and Olympic gold medalist Diann Roffe and others.

Snowmaking will continue on through the fall in order to provide the best winter conditions for downhill sport enthusiasts.  Interested in skiing Copper Mountain this winter?  Follow the link to buy your season pass today, http://www.coppercolorado.com/winter/plan_and_buy/season_passes/copperpass.

History of Copper Mountain

Chuck Lewis, the founding father of Copper, purchased 280 acres at the base of the mountain in 1971.  He worked closely with the Forest Service to create parameters and restrictions for the ski area along the mountain.  Construction began in the summer of 1971 to create a variety of ski trails.

Over the years, terrain expansions continued and additional lifts were added to keep up with the growing resort.  In 1997, Intrawest, a leading company in resort operations and development, purchased Copper Mountain and continued to focus on improving ski conditions and the surrounding resort.

Powdr. Corporation stepped in and purchased the resort from Intrawest in 2009 and has made the mountain experience what it is today!
