WAVE: The water+light+sound Festival

Breck Create’s next free art festival will run nightly from 5:00 – 11:00 pm Thursday to Sunday, June 2nd to the 5th.  This four-day celebration of water+light+sound will incorporate several mediums in its indoor and outdoor exhibits, collaborations and performances to evoke thought, conversation and stimulate all of your senses!

Check out the full itinerary below and prepare yourself for an incredible kick-off to summer:

Outdoor Exhibits:

5:00 – 11:00 pm – Light Origami at the Riverwalk Center Lawn, 150 West Adams Ave. A Tokyo-based artist known for his work in architecture, interior design and spatial art has created a life-size 3D kaleidoscope made of origami shapes. Visitors can step inside the kaleidoscope to experience a unique light show through several shapes and mirrors in this one-of-a-kind space.

5:00 – 11:00 pm – MY YOUR OUR WATER at the Blue River Bikeway & Dredge Pool. This conversation-provoking exhibit is four-fold, encompassing a Facebook group, interactive blog, floating sign and tricycle ride that encourages attendees to engage around current water issues, petitions, and calls to action.

*The artist will speak about her exhibit on Sunday, June 5th at the Old Masonic Hall from 3-4 pm.

5:00 – 11:00 pm – The Pool at the Blue River Plaza. In the courtyard adjacent to the Visitor Center a concentric interactive pool of light will appear during the festival. Attendees can run, jump, or walk on the circles and see how the light responds and interacts. The Boulder artist behind the concept had the idea several years before technology caught up and made it possible for her sensational creation. Inspired by watching puddles of water reflect color during sunset, this exhibit will create mesmerizing color patterns.

8:30 – 11:00 pm – Projected Visions at the Riverwalk Center Façade, 150 W Adams Ave. This visual projection is a new-age form of storytelling that will feature a nightly theme on the side of the Blue River building, inviting visitors to get a glimpse of the artist’s creative process. The artist, Ryan Patrick Griffin, is based in LA and combines drawing, painting, photography, animation, video and digital media to share stories. He has performed internationally and Breckenridge is fortunate to be on his summer tour schedule!

*The artist will speak about his work and his installation on Saturday, June 4 at the Old Masonic Hall from 3-4 pm.

Indoor Exhibits:

5:00 – 11:00 pm – LightScapes at the Old Masonic Hall. This indoor exhibit is a series of illuminated boxes that capture the physics of geometrics, light, space, color, and dimension with fluorescent light.

5:00 – 11:00 pm – Temporal Currents at the Old Masonic Hall. This interactive audio/visual installation explores under water sounds and movement.

*The artist will speak about her exhibit on Friday 3-4:00 pm at the Old Masonic Hall

Collaborations & Performances:

5:00 – 11:00 – Luminous Movement is a nightly performance at the Riverwalk Center that will begin at 5pm, 7pm, and 9pm. Members of the Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance community will wow the audience with their incredible aerialist movement coordinated with a projected light show and accompanying soundtrack.

8:30 – 10:30 Sonic Chroma at the Riverwalk Patio. A new classical repertoire will be performed by The National Repertory Orchestra in front of a live digital painting for a performance to please many senses.

9:00 – 11:00 at the Old Masonic Hall Patio. WAVE Reels is a collaboration between Breck Create and the Breckenridge Film Festival and will incorporate a series of short films that represent light, water, and sound. Some films will look at controversial current affairs surrounding the international topic of water.

TALKS & WORKSHOPS: Look for the (*) below the event descriptions above to see which artists are hosting talks to elaborate upon their work and installations.

This is the first year for Breckenridge’s WAVE: Light+Water+Sound festival and one of the five annual festivals hosted by Breck Create. Inspired by the increasing popularity of light shows around the world, the committee behind WAVE aimed to create a free interactive event that would appeal to several demographics.
